Teaching English in France
Tony,
My wife and I, have, like so many others, have fallen in love with the South of France. We are visiting the Minervois area this year. I know it is impossible to find work there but was wondering if you have ever heard of the possibility of teaching English in exchange for cash or accommodations. I know this is quite a stretch but I’m trying to find some method of funding my writing while living there six months of the year. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Bernie
With over 100,000 English people living in the South of France and many American, Australian and other English speaking residents, the chances of getting any employment teaching English are small – also you must have a diploma to teach English as a foreign language, be correctly registered and pay taxes and social charges. To work in any other way is illegal and will give a lot of costs and problems.
The Languedoc is a great place to live – I would not want to be anywhere else in the world for a lifestyle – but for earning a living, it is something else.
Let me know when you are down my way, you can buy me a glass of Minervois wine
Bonne Chance
Tony
As someone contemplating a move to France and a fluent French speaker my thought is to teach French to the English who abound in certain areas. There does seem to me a pressing need for this. I do have relevant qualifications and recently have been teaching GCSE to adults. However a year or so the college made all foreign language teachers redundant in order to devote more financial resource to teaching numeracy and literacy to 16 year olds!I’m sure they don’t have to do this in France where I agree educational standards are higher.
