Portable Soup

My aim is to build a strong and useful Internet community for everyone who travels and needs accommodation or who has accommodation and offers it to others.
Ther are a lot of sites like Travelocity, Tripadvisor, LastMinute, Wayn etc - or rental sites like vrbo, HolidayRentals, A1Vacations etc - but these are not really communities like Facebook or “open” sites with a lot of lateral linking like Craigslist. So I am going to build one.
I have a great start - a community through my blogs and newsletters, ten years of experience plus over a thousand rental properties on my rentals sites. It is a good start, but a small one. There is a long way to go.
I have also designed a good logo and now I am announcing the name of the new site.
www.PortableSoup.com - the is no website on that url yet - I have only just registered it - I may design the www.PortableSoup.mobi site first for the iphone etc, but you are the very first person to hear of this groundbreaking site and the new name - ummmmm, what do you think?

We have two apartments in Bagneres de Luchon, Haute Garonne, Midi Pyrenees for rent plus run a Chambre d’Hote come Catered Chalet in St Beat 31440, Haute Garonne.
All these are advertised on host sites
Apartment - Abritel, Homlidays, Holiday Lettings
Chambre d’Hote - various chambre d’hote sites in France.
How do we place our properties with you to advertise for travellers? We will have our own website in about 2 months time.

Hi Tony,
Unfortunately the website name only raises connotations of portable loos and I’m quite sure that you don’t intend that - what concept are you selling - it sounds like a soup cart in Indonesia - not very French or suggestive of France.
Sorry to be so negative, but sometimes the most brilliant ideas turn out a little less brilliant in the harsh light of day.
By the way I really miss the comings and goings in Nizas.

Hi Tony,
Some will think your PortableSoup name is amusing, others will ignore it and think of soup kitchens and food from vans. Not a name I warm to - but you did ask for opinions. I haven’t got an alternative, but would have thought some indication in the title as to content would attract more people.
I did have a quick try at putting my place on your site, but, not being technophobic didn’t manage it!

Sorry but I think the name is wrong, it has no good connotations, which if you are going to choose something random it really needs to have, and it has no relation to its subject matter, which can be OK if you go for something meaningless like Google or Ocado, but not two words with very set meanings. May appeal to soup lovers.

My first reaction to the name “Portable Soup” was positive–a very “homey” feeling taken to a new place. But then, that’s the way Americans feel about soup–it’s warm, conforting, comfortable.

Glad to see that you have your teeth into something new and back into a field that is so very close-to-your-heart. I am sure at the end of the day ……the actual name is irrelevant to the task at-hand, but like other comments above, I do not think it helps your cause or intended new identity. Now that I have knocked-it, I s`pose I should offer an laternative …..let me think on-it whilst I laze on the beach over the coming weekend.
Best wishes to the Tidswell family and with good planning should be able to make it over your way later in the year …….most likely October, again. Let me know if you would like some promotional work done or some level of tie in together from this side, in Oz.

Another negative for Portable Soup, I fear- why not make it far less original but more understandable? As far as I can tell ( google), homeonthefly is an unused name which might better express your intentions?

Being from across the pond in Canada, we are the land of oddly named companies like Big Fish and Fido. Fido is a telephone co. but all their adverts are full of faithful dogs:) I don’t mind PortableSoup. Remember that if you do use a name like ‘flat’ instead, it is a British term and we consider the term flat to mean apartments though it is a term rarely used over here. How about Travel Soup?

I think the name is wrong. If you are going to go random, you need to marry words that make some sort of connection for people, and hopefully relate in some way to what the website is about. Or you can make up a word, like Google or Ocado, which is neutral but sticky. The name also does not link to the logo in any way. What about boulestothat.com?

yeah, sorry to add to the list of non-believers, but being in design i know how easy it can be to ‘fall in love with your ideas’ when you sit staring at them for long enough, only for the shock of reality when you present them to an independent audience. i’d give it a rethink, myself.

The word “potable” keeps coming to mind for me, as in “eau potable” therefore giving “potable soup” a bilingual twist,making it “drinkable soup” ??
They originally thought it was Alzheimers but I’ve now been told it’s a relatively new disease called CRAFT for short— Can’t Remember A F…..ing Thing!
