Amazon
January 11, 2008
I have been using Amazon for buying books and stuff for over ten years. Last year I found them invaluable for sending a replacement camera to my daughter in the USA and Christmas presents to my family in the UK.
Although I have been an associate of theirs since the beginning I have not put their books and stuff on my sites, until yesterday. I wanted to offer a selection of books I am reviewing and using Amazon is the best way to present them to you - also I do earn a commission if you buy any and this is very important to me.
Looking through their services and product list I was interested to find that the prices they offer are good and I know from experience that their delivery and service is very reliable, so even if I found somehting a little cheaper elsewhere, the convenience of buying from Amazon can make them the best deal in many cases.
But, I was puzzled by the big differences in prices from the American site and the UK site. For the book I reviewed yesterday clearly the Uk is much cheaper, but for cameras it is much better to buy them in the USA - also the choice seems wider for American products, of the nine things I strongly recommend a visitor to Paris considers getting from Amazon, only four were availble from the UK
Have a look at two pages I just made of equipment I know is good and would strongly recomment anyone chose from for a trip to Paris - this is the American page and this is the British one.
There are only four products on the British page as the others are not available from Amazon.co.uk, but the prices are much lower on the American page. There is a 20 percent higher tax difference for value Added tax etc from the UK, but clearly it is better to buy many things in the USA if you can.
Living in France it makes no difference to me where I buy from

Hi Tony
I’ve often wondered about this very subject but thought that perhaps goods would be not be guaranteed from say the US website. Also that possibly restrictions on countries that are delivered to may mean it is better to buy from your own country’s Amazon. I have never checked it through - do you know the answer?
