Most do not understand the basic needs of the average end user who normally wants sites which are simple, easy to navigate and able to do what they want with just a couple of clicks. Realistically if you want to be at the top of a search engine for any length of time, the only sure way, in my opinion, is to pay for it because although we can often second guess how search engines work they are constantly changing their parameters, so what may work one month may not the next. Usually it is difficult to find a single person with all the skills you require as you will always need a combination of artistic and technical skills - even including the odd geek.
