Monday, IT or not IT, that is the question

May 17, 2007

My own marketing is predominately Internet driven - for over ten years I have only been using the Internet to develop business - a good thing, and a bad thing, it puts all my eggs in one basket, but it does seem that the other “baskets” are not as effective as they once were.

However, the Internet is getting much more complex, competitive and corrupted. It seems to have bred a whole new species of humans - some call them geeks, but this is a gentle and almost derisory work for a boffin-like “inky-swot” with a baseball cap, tee shirt and glasses - the species I find more dangerous is the IT “expert” - these are often focused people who have gained disciplines in some computer skills - they can be recognised by the speed and ferocity of hitting keyboards and the string of garbled verbless sentances used to explain any computer or Internet function. A superior arrogance gives them an air of confidence, which is very misleading.

They are very dangerous in business and should be watched carefully - I admire a geeky series of newsletters by Chris Pirillo - here is a link to his own observation of how an IT division can be dangerous to your wealth. Your Internal Departments and Your SEO Firm - A Play in Five Acts
